This is the article on the mutated version of the Venom symbiote. For the Carnage symbiote, head to Carnage (symbiote). For other uses, see Carnage (disambiguation).

Venom is a symbiote created by Doctor Octopus for Norman Osborn in hopes of replicating Spider-Man's powers for the latter's Spider-Soldiers project. After retrieving a blood sample from Spider-Man, Doctor Octopus isolated the deadliest aspect of Spider-man's DNA to give the lifeform distilled aggression, making it incredibly savage and difficult to control. As a symbiote, it has the ability to latch onto humans and take control of their bodies as its hosts.

Harry Osborn is the Venom's first host before being saved from it by Spider-Man. Unaware that Peter Parker is Spider-Man, the Green Goblin later injects Peter with a sample of the symbiote to create the perfect weapon to destroy his nemesis, causing the organism to mutate into "Carnage" before Harry reabsorbs it, thus reverting the symbiote to its original state. After Flash Thompson bonded with the symbiote, he becomes Venom's permanent host.
