Scarlet Spider is a former member of the Sinister Seven and a member of the Web-Warriors. Scarlet Spider is a perfected Synthezoid Doctor Octopus and Arnim Zola created using Spider-Man's DNA that was designed to be the leader of the Spider Slayers. In the beginning, Scarlet Spider had no knowledge of his true origins, as Ock had implanted false memories into his brain and told lies to the former in order to retain his loyalty. This led Scarlet Spider to believe he was born as a normal human and grew up as a street orphan before Ock supposedly "saved" him and gave him spider-like powers at the cost of his memories.

As part of Ock's plans to defeat Spider-Man, Scarlet Spider was sent into S.H.I.E.L.D. as a spy and joined the Web-Warriors. During his time with the superheroes, he met May Parker and was given the name Ben Reilly, after May's late husband, Ben Parker. Touched by the kindness and respect Spider-Man and his aunt had shown him, he betrayed Ock and presumably sacrificed his life to prevent Ock's Octopus Island from destroying New York City. Scarlet Spider survived the crash, but he kept this a secret and refused to return to the Web-Warriors out of shame for his past actions. He decided to search for answers about his identity, which eventually led him to reunite with Spider-Man. After discovering the truth of his origins, Scarlet Spider became infuriated and disillusioned, but with encouragement from Spider-Man, he overcame his initial programming and resolved not to let his origins affect him. Now focused on establishing his own identity as an independent being, Scarlet Spider rejoined the Web-Warriors as true member of the team.

Trivia

• Scarlet Spider's incarnation in the Ultimate Spider-Man series is an amalgam of the first Scarlet Spider, Ben Reilly, and the fourth and current Scarlet Spider, Kaine. In the The Amazing Spider-Man comic book series, Ben Reilly and Kaine are both clones of Peter Parker created by Jackal. While this incarnation of Scarlet Spider shares Kaine's costume, abilities (e.g. his stringers and organic webbing), and belligerent personality, he takes on the name "Ben Reilly" in the series. However, unlike in the comic book series, Scarlet Spider does not appear to be a clone of Peter.
