Flint Marko is a human who, after being caught in an nuclear explosion that altered his molecular structure into sand particles, became a mentally unstable criminal known as "Sandman". Eventually, Spider-Man, realizing that Sandman is a benevolent person despite his past, decides to shelter him at the Triskelion and offers him to join S.H.I.E.L.D. whenever he feels ready to become an official agent.
